Insomniac’s massive music festival franchise, The Electric Daisy Carnival, appears to be expanding. Twitter comments made by Insomniac’s CEO, Pasqualle Rotella, seem to suggest a move to bring the event to Chicago where it will take place over Memorial Day Weekend. A new twitter handle, @EDCchicago2013, has been created and is actively adding credibility to the rumors. Memorial Day Weekend is also when Chicago’s biggest current dance music event, The Future Sound Music Festival, is scheduled and would be in direct competition with EDC Chicago. However, investigations conducted by the dance music blog Electronic Midwest have revealed communications between Rotella and the Aura Presents, the promoters of the Future Sound Music Festival, which suggest that the competition won’t be so stiff after all. “Insomniac and Aura had at first attempted to work together to merge the two festivals,” the report states. “But numerous funding complications and misunderstanding among business partners later caused almost all of the confirmed talent for FSDMV to back out after artist deposits went unpaid.” According to Electronic Midwest, Aura Presents has filed for bankruptcy leaving a clear path for Rotella to make his move. Reactions have been mixed with some people welcoming the event and others fearing the commercialization of a Chicago dance music scene that has remained relatively unique and regional. If the rumors are true, Illinois will join California, Texas, Nevada, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Colorado, and Puerto Rico as host states.
